BB Mangamuka is a hand-crafted NZ typeface anchored in Tai Tokerau, Northland
Mangamuka is a small district, kind of in the middle of Tai Tokerau Northland and at the headwaters of the Hokianga Harbour. “The Mangamukas” is a term many northlanders know well as being a very windy, very beautiful section of road south of Kaitaia that runs through the Mangamuka Gorge and over the Maungataniwha range. Get over the Mungamukas and your in the Far North.
“I remember feeling car sick as a kid going over the mangamukas the winding road that went up and up and onwards forever, the mamaku ferns above the road - the smell of gas in the holden staion wagon heading up on an annual camping trip to the Far North. I have strong memories of bombing down them in my mate Rangi’s mini when we were supposed to be at high school, but were at Shippies instead..”
To the untrained eye there may not appear to be too much to see in Mangamuka, but for hand-crafted, sense-of-place, NZ typography hound there is greatness abounds.
All these things combine to be why Mangamuka is the locally-connected source of inspiration for BB Mangamuka a hand-crafted, locally connected typeface that is anchored in the North. For the people and places of the North, Tai Tokerau, Te Hiku o te ika-a-Maui.
