Coming over the Brynderwyns and seeing the outline of Te Whara/Bream Head, the sparkling Bream Bay, and the Hen and Chicken Islands. All Northlanders know that wonderful feeling of coming home.
Going fishing with your friends and family, the seabirds all waiting patiently, the work-ups, the whales, pilchards, snappers, gurnards, and kingis. This place is paradise found—McLeod Bay, Te Whara, the Hen and Chicken Islands, Sail Rock down to Bream Tail and Mangawhai Harbour. An aquatic wonderland, a hub of biodiversity and natural beauty. Gannets diving, seabirds sitting, sanctuary islands offering their protection.
Sitting out the back waiting for a wave at the Cove, Racecourse, Mangawhai Bar, or Oceans.
Cartographer’s Notes
I've spent a lot of time in Bream Bay and the surrounds, farting about in tinnies, surfing, fishing, exploring, and pulling weeds off the Hen and Chicken Islands. It's such a wonderful place, with its dramatic volcanic landscapes and rich biodiversity.
I really wanted to capture some of the special nature of the place, so I began with the snapper/tamure/bream in the centre of the map and just kind of built it out from there. I also wanted to connect Whangarei Heads and Mangawhai in the map, with the Hen and Chicks being our shared taonga / treasure and Bream
Bay being the glue that holds it all together. But there is no denying, wildlife and nature are the stars of the show, us humans are all just hanging out on the fringes.
If you ever get a chance to spend some time on the Hen and Chicken Islands, wholeheartedly take that opportunity. It can change your outlook on life. It certainly was a great influence on mine and is definitely why this map exists.
