The beauty that is Mahia, the beaches and hills, the waves and marae, space rockets and crayfish. Summer games of cricket and burnt sausages simmering on the BBQ. The boat motor that won't bloody start, the 'I forgot the sunscreen' sunburns. The ice cream melting down your hand, the southerly brewing on the horizon. The summer holidays at the bach, a round of golf, a snorkel and fish, an afternoon surf, the stars at night, the sun in the sky. Mahia and the beautiful sense of freedom. The sun-bleached white cliffs, eroding hillsides.
Cartographer's Notes:
To me Mahia feels like no other place, an island the NZ mainland seems to desperately be clinging to via the thin strip of sand, isthmus. This is definitely one of my favourite maps. There's something about it that's quite magical. It's a great scale and the shape is kinda like a diamond, surrounded by ocean but still connected to the rest of the country. The many marae, the hills and little settlements, surfing and xmas bach memories… it's just a beautiful map representing a beautiful place. Enjoy!
